You can reach the next level by gaining enough XP, or experience points. When you level up, you get a Congratulations screen, which shows you the new items that you unlocked and can now use.

What is super cool about PSS, is that you can see what you will unlock at the next level!! I really like to know what I am working towards so I think it is great that they show it to you when you level up .If you forget, you can go to your Market screen (bottom right of your screen) and browse the market and any items you don't have yet will be locked and have a level beside them.
