You can collect coins at time intervals (depending on the animal, more info on this below) from your pets. When it is time to collect your coins, a Collect bubble will appear over your pet's pen.
When you click on it, you gain coins.

Once you collect your coins, you also need to feed your pet. A Feed bubble will appear over your pets cage as soon as you collect coins. When you tap the Feed bubble, you feed your pets and gain XP (experience).
When your pets get fed, they tell you they are happy by all the hearts they release. These don't give you anything (that I know of, they might help your star rating, which is shown under your XP, top left).
